Watching those TikTok mukbangs—specifically the ones with tacos dipped in steaming red sauce and ramen—triggered such an intense craving that I had to take action. One trip to MEX Avenue Mexican Table (located in the Burleigh Square shopping center on West Burleigh Avenue in Wauwatosa) simply wasn’t enough to satisfy my cravings.
After two visits to Mex Ave in a single week, I’ve found the perfect spot right here near Wauwatosa West that will not only satisfy your Tik Tok inspired cravings but also provide you with plenty of other flavorful and satisfying dishes
On the menu you’ll find familiar staples like tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas as well as various brunch items.
In my experience, no matter the plate, the food is elevated with fresh ingredients. And the taste and presentation of the food matches the clean, fresh minimalistic aesthetic of the restaurant. MEX Avenue is a modern Mexican restaurant that leans into a more polished, slightly upscale take on traditional flavors while still keeping things approachable.
On my first visit I brought a couple friends to try out MEX Avenue with me. It was a busy day with many people cashing in on their two dollar taco Tuesday special. Despite being busy, they handled the high volume of customers with positive, smooth and efficient customer service.
After ordering at the counter, my friends found one of the few tables available. It was a beautiful spring day and sitting at one of the picnic tables outside was perfect.
We started with a super tasty appetizer the MEX Ave offers – the Elote. Elote is Mexican corn with mayo, cotija cheese, and fresh lime sauce, as well as cajun seasoning.
We received our appetizer almost as quickly as we sat down. I certainly had no room to complain about the timing of my appetizer or the rest of my food was being served. A smile on the server’s face for every dish served, only kept me wanting to try more food. and more refined flavor combinations.
After that I had Birria Tacos and Birria Ramen with Mexican rice and beans as well as steak tacos with Mexican rice and beans on the side. For a drink, I decided to go with a fresh bottle of Pineapple Jarrito, a strong tropical soda from Mexico, as well as a jar of fresh horchata.
A highlight and well known star of the menu at Mex Ave are their Birria Tacos. When that entree landed on my table I was drooling in my brain. I was recommended to get the Birria Ramen to eat with the Birria Tacos. When that entree landed on my table, I was instantly hungry. I put together the noodles and birria meat in the taco, and when I tell you the flavor from both combinations is exactly how you imagine the taste in the mukbang videos you see of the people dipping their taco in that special sauce.
Birria meat and sauce is a supreme flavor that can not escape your tastebuds without a jarrito soda, or a fresh jar of horchata (I had both). The birria meat itself from MEX Ave is shredded, slow cooked beef. Tender to the tongue, birria has a great combination with melted cheese inside of a taco, or mixed with noodles in a light spicy sauce.
I wanted to try dessert as well so I got the Churro Bites that came with a sugar sauce. These were the freshest churros I’ve had in a long time, it was like biting into a perfect piece of crispy chewy toast. The churros did not have too much sugar on the sides, but an amazing sugar light sauce like a Cinnabun you could lay onto the churro. But a perfect amount of sugar so that you could taste the churro itself instead of a mouthful of sugar.
On my second day at MEX Ave I took the advice of the cashier to try the MEX Fries which is a base of crispy waffle fries, topped with tender beef pieces, as well as melted cheese on top. The dish was decorated perfectly by sectioning fourths around the fries with purple onions, pico, jalapenos, and extra pico. I had another three birria tacos.
For how much food I ordered in the two days of me eating at MEX Ave, I had enough space in my stomach to eat dessert. Sopapillas have a deep fired, tasty, sweet, warm sauce in the middle that you can dip in the extra sauce.
For each day I ate at Mex Ave, I spent around $70 per day for 6 items – 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 dessert and 2 drinks. If you have space in your stomach like mine it is worth the purchase for all plates. Every entree is around 8-15 bucks. I think this was a reasonable price for the quantity and quality of the food that was served.
My overall experience is a vibe of its strongest points, the restaurant is clean, and energetic without feeling loud or chaotic. The space works just as well for a casual dinner as it does for a date night or small group outing.
Whether you’re looking for a Tiktok-worthy birria dip or a chill date spot, MEX Avenue delivers upscale flavor at a fair price.
I highly recommend you catch some delicious grub at MEX Ave any day of the week between 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM..
