I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Mr. Schill, a math teacher at East. I asked him 11 questions about being a teacher at East so that students and staff can know a little more about him!
How long have you been teaching, and why did you decide to become a teacher?
This is my 14th year teacher. I wanted to become a teacher because I’m a curious person who likes to learn, and I wanted a career that would make an impact on those around me.
Where have you taught in the past?
Wauwatosa West High School, Riverside University High School, and Milwaukee Marshall High School
How was that different or similar to teaching here?
Things change from year to year, but overall, high school is pretty similar everywhere.
Did anything about East in particular make you want to teach here?
East has a reputation as a solid school, and I wanted to work where I could grow as a teacher, while being close to home, and make a difference in students’ lives.
What’s your favorite thing about teaching at East?
It’s within 15 minutes of where I live.
If you could change anything about the school, what would it be?
Better traffic around the school. Getting in and out of the parking lot can be difficult.
What’s the best advice you would give to yourself in high school, or just high schoolers in general?
The amount of success you have is directly related to the effort you put in. Also, don’t be afraid to try new things and get to know people who are different from you.
What’s your favorite book and why?
The Harry Potter book series. I read these over and over when I was in high school.
Were there any other careers you considered besides teaching?
Architecture and Computer Science.
What activities did you participate in in high school?
I played baseball.
