Student volunteers helped register 18 Tosa West students to vote during lunch periods on Thursday, Feb. 26. Volunteers partnered with the nonpartisan League of Women Voters to guide students through the voter registration process.
Students needed to bring a form of identification in order to register. Volunteers from the League of Women Voters helped students check whether they were eligible to vote and walked them through the registration steps. To register for the upcoming election, students must be 18 years old by April 1, 2026.
The April 1st election includes several important races, including seats on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and other state and local offices and the Wauwatosa School Board.
Annette, a League of Women Voters volunteer helping run the event, said the organization regularly hosts voter registration events in communities across the state.
“What we do is set up registration events for adults all over the place, including high schools,” Annette said. “We make sure that people know how to register to vote and how to access information.”
Many first-time voters are surprised by how simple the process can be. In most cases, students can register using a valid driver’s license, a state ID or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
Students who do not have a state ID can obtain one for free by bringing documents that verify their identity, such as a birth certificate.
Organizers said helping students register to vote is an important way to encourage civic engagement and ensure young people have a voice in government. Students who were unable to register during the event can still register online at https://myvote.wi.gov.
Each time a student completed their voter registration during the lunch event, a bell rang in the cafeteria — a small celebration marking another new voter.
