This action-comedy “Playdate”(2025) follows a stay-at-home dad whose ordinary day at the park with his child quickly spirals into chaos. But don’t let the name fool you, this movie is a movie not for your young kids but will be hilarious for the teen and adult audiences.
The movie begins with our main character Brian who was told by his wife Emily to bond with his dance enthusiastic step-son Lucas. In an attempt to complete the task; he takes Lucas to a park. At the park they meet their main buddies for the ride Jeff the fun and clueless war veteran and CJ the absurdly athletic and somewhat mean kid playing a really intense game of catch. After the Lucas and CJ bond the group goes to Jeffs. During the playdate suddenly the event spirals out of control and the group goes for a road trip to get away from the unknown advisories. Through the events of dealing with these enemies the group grow closer and learn what it truly means to be family.
Luke Greenfield did a great job of making the movie both funny and entertaining by using the overused cliches in action movies and adding a funny unique twist for each. In one moment they took the cliche of a restaurant fight in action movies and flipped it to have the employees getting hit in the cross fire of Jeff’s and the Mercenary’s missed punches and them shouting in pain while being in the mascot costumes making the supposed to be intense moment and making it far less intense through these over the top reactions by the employees who tried to stop the fight. Luke Greenfield also did a great job building a bond between the cast that feels unbreakable through the extreme events that take place and what they get through together.
The visuals add a layer to the humor that words alone can’t make. In one scene they have a flashback of Jeff breaking CJ out of the facility and the visuals make it feel like Jeff is completely crazy to the viewers. This made it easy to relate and laugh at Brian’s reaction.
The movie clearly portrays the overarching theme of family in many ways. One of the ways is through the bond between Jeff and CJ although they are not father and son like suspected in the beginning of the movie they grow closer together and their relationship becomes one of father and son. The other way family is portrayed is through Brian and Lucas. Throughout the movie Brian has had the responsibility to take care of Lucas and growing closer, so he tries his best but they don’t seem to grow closer until they meet Jeff and go on this out of this world adventure and along the way they grow closer and at the end of the day they true done what Brian’s wife Emily had asked him at the beginning to do, to grow closer.
This movie is a funny and intriguing story that I recommend that every teen and adult should watch, and for an extra layer of humor watch it with friends or family.
