Here’s the Scoop on Custard

With Culver’s and Oscar’s being so popular among high school students, it’s obvious that frozen custard is a favorite among high school students. But which one is the best one? I tested a single scoop of chocolate custard at four of the most popular frozen custard places around town, and this is what I came up with.

My number one choice out of the four would probably be Leon’s Frozen Custard.
Leon’s – 3131 S. 27th St.
Milwaukee, WI 53215
Leon’s is an awesome place to go for a nice cup of custard during the summer. Open since 1942, it’s a unique place and it’s the “Home of the World’s Finest Custard”! They offer sandwiches, soda, and of course custard. Leon’s is a drive in, and it’s open all year. When I went to Leon’s there were a ton of people in line. We ordered a hot dog and a scoop of frozen custard, and it was served in a timely fashion.
Cost- $1.27
Texture- creamy and very custard like
Size- A small half cup, just enough for one person, but a little expensive

My second choice would be Gilles Frozen Custard.
Gilles Frozen Custard – 7515 W. Bluemound Road
Milwaukee, WI 53213
Gilles’s is a great place to go in summer or winter, but mostly summer. With both outdoor and indoor seating, most people order their food (off a menu of burgers, fries, onion rings, and custard) and sit outside or in their cars.
Cost- $1.33
Texture- Thick but still soft enough to melt in your mouth
Size- smaller portion but still worth the money

My third choice would be Culver’s.
Culver’s – 3705 N. 124th St.
Brookfield, WI 53005
A popular place for Tosa West students to go after sporting events, Culver’s is a good place to sit down and have a quick dinner of burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard or salads. But, if you’re super busy and just need quick stop, the drive through is perfect. I went there for dinner and then after got my scoop of custard.
Cost- $1.69
Texture- Creamy but slightly runny and melted very fast
Size – Good portion, enough for one person.

My last choice would be Oscar’s.
Oscar’s – 21165 Hwy. 18
Waukesha, WI 53186
Oscar’s is a place very similar to Culver’s with hot dogs and burgers and frozen custard. The sundaes are large and always freshly made and the food is delivered in a timely fashion. I also went here for dinner one night, and then got my custard afterwards.
Cost- $1.78
Texture- Tasted more like ice cream than custard and was a bit salty
Size – Bigger dishes than Culver’s enough for one or two people
