What motivated you to take up this sport?
It ran in the family when I was young, so watching my cousins and aunts, I just wanted to keep it going. I started teaching my sisters and trying to make them better players. It motivates me to keep going.
What is the most cherished moment of your time on the basketball court?
Meeting new people, making friends, meeting WNBA players like Angel Reese at AAU tournaments, and completing goals that I never thought I could.
What aspects of basketball do you find most enjoyable?
The time that I spend with the team because it’s a team sport, not an individual sport. All the memories that we make as a team and the people I meet make it enjoyable.
In your opinion, what qualities make you an excellent teammate?
I like to be a leader, I stay positive, and I like to push my teammates. For example, I’ll tell someone who I’m playing defense on to body me to make them a better player. I like to help them reach their goals.
If you could change anything about how basketball is done at West, what would it be?
It’s kind of one-sided. Everything is about the boys so make the girls noticeable and for us to not always get the hand-me-downs.
What sacrifices have you made to compete in basketball at a high level?
There are a lot of days I have to skip school for basketball. My family spends a lot of money on AAU. I can’t really hang out with friends a lot because I have to go to school, practice, train, and then go home and do my homework. It doesn’t let me have an outside life.
What are your goals for the remaining weeks of the basketball season?
We’ve only won three games so to switch it around and work harder because we can beat these teams and just keep our heads up.
Do you intend to keep playing basketball after finishing school?
Most definitely. If I don’t play in college, I’d like to coach basketball and make it bigger for girls.
