Mr. “G” has been a student and parking lot supervisor at Tosa West since 2016. He is well known for his positive and engaging attitude with students and staff.
What do you typically do on a normal day at West?
¨Check the halls and try to keep kids from skipping. If any kids are skipping, try to keep them out of the halls, out of the stairwells and get them back in class. Make sure they’re not goofing off, make sure they’re not being aggressive towards each other. Make sure no kids are getting bullied in the building. Make sure the doors are locked, the outer doors in the building, and just be visible to all the students and the staff.¨
What do you enjoy about working here?
¨I enjoy being with the kids, supporting the kids. I like the staff here at West. I just like being around the kids, watching them grow and develop to be a young man or lady.¨
How long have you been working here?
¨I’ve been working here for 8 years. I’ve been working in this district for 15 years. I came from a detention center.¨
Tell me more about your time working at the detention center
¨Well, I was an assistant in the art classroom, where I had to check the students and make sure everything was accounted for. So if you come into the art room, you have to make sure the paint brushes, the crayons, the markers, the pencils, all accounted for before any student leaves the room.¨
What do you want students to think about you after you retire?
¨That I was there for support when they needed me, they could come and talk to me. A lot of the kids like me because I’m myself. I’m no better than the other kids. I’m just older, but I respect the kids as they respect me.¨
Is there anything you wish West Improved on? And if yes how so?
¨I wish we just had stricter rules for the kids that fight or that’s late all the time. If a kid were to fight, I think they should be expelled from the school. Regardless if it’s the starting quarterback, the star basketball player, the star soccer player. If you hit someone else and someone tells you to stop and you continue, then I think you should just be expelled.¨
What job would you like to do if you weren’t a supervisor?
¨I would probably be either a police officer or firefighter. But the thing about being a firefighter is that I’m afraid of heights.¨
We heard you enjoy grilling, what’s your favorite food to grill and who do you like to grill for?
¨I grill for all kinds of occasions. I cater for all kinds of occasions. I grill for churches. I do baby showers, graduations. I do pig roasts. My favorite thing I like to grill is probably the beef brisket. I love cooking beef brisket, but I just love cooking all around. I’ve been cooking since I was about 9 years old.¨
What movie or TV show has impacted you the most?
¨Actually, I only watch a little bit of sports. I’m really not a TV fan. I listen to a lot of music, jazz music. I’m not much of a television person. With me sitting down watching television, I feel there’s a need for me to be doing something else with my time and not just sitting around on my couch.¨
What advice do you have for people coming to West in the future?
¨It’s a great school. I consider it being family Oriented. The teachers really love teaching the kids, and the support is there. 100% for any student that comes to Wauwatosa West. The community is outstanding for Wauwatosa. So moving forward, the kids are great and we hope that we get more kids to facilitate.¨
