Miss Saigon’s Thailand Flavors

The first time I had egg rolls, they were repulsive; but that was before I went to Miss Saigon’s on the corner of 92nd and Center Street in Wauwatosa.

Miss Saigon’s opened early this March in the space formerly occupied by Smoothielicious. It is a Vietnamese restaurant that offers food for everyone. They have a variety of flavors of smoothies, spring rolls, entrees, such as a sautéed black pepper and beef dish, and of course, egg rolls.

Since egg rolls and spring rolls were their most popular items on the menu, I decided to try it. The egg rolls were absolutely outstanding. It amazed me that I could go from hating a food item, to loving it. Their smoothies were also delicious. Miss Saigon’s smoothies are not just your every day smoothie; they are special. There are small balls of tapioca at the bottom of every smoothie. The tapioca balls give a little extra flavor. They are also a bit of a surprise if you have never had this type of drink.

Not only does Miss Saigon’s have an excellent menu, but it also has a simple, yet cozy atmosphere. On one side of the room is the fire place, which was blazing on the day I visited. Decorations include Chinese lecterns and other Asian décor. The single room the restaurant occupies has a simple, but personal feel.

The staff is delightful. When I dined there, everyone was smiling and making sure that I was happy and content with the service. The owner, Kim Yim, was especially nice. Yim may be familiar to West students as the friendly lady who cuts hair down the block at the hair salon – A Fresher Imagine. Knowing this, I was curious how she made the switch from hair cutting to egg roll making. She responded, “It’s [cooking Vietnamese food] my passion; it has been for 17 years.” Miss Saigon’s is not her first restaurant. Her first restaurant was in Boston. She then had to move here, and is now, finally, embracing her passion once more.

So, the next time you are stumped on where to eat out, go to Miss Saigon’s. It offers you a fresh, new, and flavorful experience.
