The co-op Wauwatosa girls lacrosse team hosted a tournament on May 10th at Hart Park and Wauwatosa East High School. Teams came from Wausau, Waunakee and Madison to participate in this tournament. “I feel like the tournament was a great experience to go against new competition in order to grow individually and as a team,” said sophomore Olivia Omon.
This is the first year our team has hosted this tournament and hope to host again in the future. The goal of this tournament is to allow teams to play different teams outside of their conference to develop as players and bond as a team. “I was very excited to organize this tournament for our girls. Usually we have a tournament in the Wisconsin Dells which is always a hassle to travel to so now with this tournament it’s more convenient for us.”,said head coach Chelsea Horne.
The girls gave it their all during the three games they played. Even though they did not win a game, they still gave it their all until the very last second and never gave up. It has been a tough season but these girls are determined to not give up “one challenge I faced while playing was staying confident and consistent throughout the tournament despite the outcome of the score” said sophomore Olivia Omon.
The final score against Waunakee was 4-9. Goals were scored by senior Olive Madden (1), junior MaryEllen Millenbach (2), and sophomore Delia Regan (1). Waunkee is ranked number 19 in the State of Wisconsin.
For the game against Wausau the final score was also 4-9. Wausau is ranked number 17 in Wisconsin. Goals were scored by senior Macy Persin (1), junior MaryEllen Millenbach (2) and sophomore Delia Regan (1). Sophomore goalie, Sophie Erikson was on a roll with over a 50% save percentage during this game.
The last game of the tournament was against Madison who are ranked 6th in the state of Wisconsin. The final score of the game was 18-5. The girls put up a tough fight against the Madison Knights, really giving it their all. Goals were scored by junior June Straka (1), senior Olive Madden (1), junior MaryEllen Millenbach (1), junior Mary Vande Hei (1), and sophomore Delia Regan (1). Senior Keira Shafer was the ground ball leader of the game with a total of 4 ground balls.
Over the course of this season the girls have put in a lot of effort into learning new plays, skills and increasing their game knowledge. “Lessons I learned.. Keep your cool. Girls are going to be rude, aggressive, but you just gotta keep your cool, not let that frustration get to you and use it to your advantage,” said senior captain Keira Shafer.
Overall this was a tough tournament for out girls but what matters is that they all had fun, got to use their new skills in game, and developed individually and as a team.
